Sedation Dentistry

If you have a fear of going to the Dentist, you should know you’re not alone. Sometimes dental fear causes people to avoid getting the dental care they need, causing pain, infection and gum disease—often leading to more pain, poor health, and tooth loss.

But there is good news! At Smile Station Family Dentistry, we can help. Over the years, Dr. Bridges has safely sedated thousands of patients so they could get the care they needed without fear. Dr. Bridges is one of only a handful of dentists in the nation to have earned diplomat status with the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation, so you can be confident you are in safe hands.

Is Dental Sedation Right For You?

If you have dental fear or anxiety for any reason, including bad past experiences, you may be a candidate for dental sedation.  Patients who have a strong gag reflex or very sensitive teeth may also benefit from dental sedation. Long treatment sessions that may need more time to be completed may be considered for sedation dentistry as well.  Dr. Bridges will determine if sedation is right for you.

Types of Dental Sedation

Oral Sedation – How it Works

After your initial consult and treatment planning visit, you’ll take a small pill prior to arriving at our office with a trusted escort of your choosing.  At this time, Dr Bridges will determine if you need further medication.  You’ll be in a very relaxed and forgetful state throughout your visit.  During your visit you’ll be fully monitored and attended for safety. Dr Bridges may also administer a numbing anesthesia to prevent pain and make the process even more comfortable once you are fully relaxed.  Once your dental work is completed, your trusted escort will drive you home and stay with you for the rest of the day. You may not drive for the entire day after taking oral sedation. The effects of oral sedation can last for several hours, but are usually gone by evening or the following morning.
IV Sedation

IV sedation may also be an option for you.  It is done using an IV drip and is sometimes used for shorter procedures.  The residual effects are usually gone within a few hours.  The escorted arrival and departure procedures are the same as for Oral Sedation.

Nitrous Oxide Gas (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous Oxide gas is a safe and effective method for light dental sedation during thea numbing process.  Nobody like to “get a shot”, and nitrous oxide gas will help you relax and ease discomfort.  It is used only for short periods of time and fully wears off within a few minutes, so you can drive home safely.
