At Smile Station Dental Care we use one when a tooth is too broken, too worn or too heavily filled for a simple filling to hold. Everything you already know about crowns still applies. The only thing that changes with a same-day crown is where it gets made and how long you wait for it.
A traditional crown is made by an outside dental laboratory. We take an impression, send it away, fit you with a temporary, and bring you back two or three weeks later when the finished crown arrives.
A same-day crown skips that middle stretch entirely. The tooth is scanned, the crown is designed and milled here in the office, and it is cemented into place before you go home. One appointment, numb once, finished.

How Your Crown Is Made While You Wait
Dr. Scott Bridges, DMD, makes same-day crowns in the office in three steps.
- Your tooth is prepared and scanned. Once the tooth is numb and shaped, a digital 3D scanner captures it. There is no tray of impression material, nothing to hold still for and nothing to gag on. The scan appears on screen in seconds, and you can see it too.
- Your crown is designed and milled. Dr. Bridges designs the crown himself, with software assisting the fine detail of how it meets your neighboring teeth and your bite. The design then goes to a milling unit in the office, which shapes the crown from a solid ceramic block.
- Your crown is polished, fitted and cemented. Dr. Bridges polishes the finished crown, checks it against your bite, adjusts where it needs adjusting, and cements it into place. You leave with the permanent crown on your tooth.

What Your Visit Looks Like
Plan on one longer appointment rather than two shorter ones. We numb the tooth, prepare it, take the scan, then design and mill the crown while you stay in the chair. Most patients read, watch something or simply rest through the milling. When the crown is ready we try it in, check the bite, adjust it and cement it.
You will be numb when you leave, the same as after a filling, and you can eat normally once that wears off. There is no temporary to protect and no two-week list of foods to avoid.
A same-day crown suits a cracked or broken tooth, a large old filling that is failing, a tooth that has had a root canal and needs covering, and a crown that has come off and needs replacing. Caring for Your New Crown
A same-day crown is looked after exactly like a natural tooth and exactly like any other crown. Brush twice a day, floss around it daily, and keep your regular cleanings and exams so we can check the margin where the crown meets the tooth. Ceramic is strong but it is not indestructible, so the usual cautions apply. Go easy on ice, hard candy and popcorn kernels. And if you grind your teeth at night, ask us about a nightguard, because grinding is the most common reason a crown of any kind gives out early.
